How to Update HTC Evo 3D to Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)

After rumored to be getting official Android 4.0 update last month, now we’re trying to write a guide on how to update your Sprint HTC Evo 3D CDMA with Ice Cream Sandwich Custom (ICS) ROM. These custom ROM only for those who can’t wait for official update which will be roll out in early 2012 according HTC official announcement. You should know that this is unofficial and could void your warranty, so think twice before you’re planning to update it. This guide will show you everything you need to do before flashing/updating your CDMA Android smartphone HTC Evo 3D. The source code of ICS will be available in mid-December right after Verizon Galaxy Nexus is available on the market, once the code is dropped you will find a lot of ICS custom ROM is floating around for all android powered phone.

How to install ICS on Evo 3D

Make sure all things are backed up. It’s highly recommended to make back up your data since you will lost all your contacts, SMS/MMS, email, call log and also installed apps. You can download MyBackup Apps if you don’t have root access, and in case you have root access you can try MyBackup Root or Titanium Backup Root. Additionally you can temporary rooting your Evo 3D to back up all installed apps, you can find in this guide on how to root your Sprint HTC Evo 3D.

How To Flashing/Install Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on HTC Evo 3D.

Before flashing you need to gain root access, before trying to rooting your Sprint HTC Evo 3D you need to know what is Hboot, your device serial number and also S-OFF/S-ON status of your android phone. If you have no idea about that you can learn a guide about attaining root access. Once you get Full Root with S-OFF now you can install any ROM, please notice that each ROM has basic instruction which maybe slightly different, so make sure you read additional instruction if any.
For now this guide will show you how to update/flash your CDMA smartphone with Clockworkmod recovery, and also we will show you how to do that with TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) recovery later.

  1. Find Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Custom ROM and download it and then copy to SD card. For now the ICS ROM isn’t available yet since the source code hasn’t been released by Google, they may be release it in mid-December 2011.
    Boot into Clockworkmod Recovery
  2. Once HTC Evo 3D successfully boot into CWM recovery use volume button to move around and power button to select menu.

  4. Perform factory reset by choose “Wipe data/factory reset” option and followed by “Wipe cache partition”.
    Choose “Install zip from SD card” option and then select “Choose zip from SD card”, find the custom ROM you have downloaded in step 1.
  5. Installation process is starting just wait few minutes, once finished you can back to main menu and reboot your android phone by choosing “Reboot system now” menu.
