Few months ago few devs are trying to build ICS for myTouch 4G using Android SDK, but it seems the project has been stopped. Fortunately, other dev with username febycv from xda now working to build Ice Cream Sandwich based on Google Android 4.0.1 Source Code, and expected to work better than SDK port. The build still on beta stage and need several bug fixes, but some users who have try it said that basic features are running smooth and fast on their android phone.
Guide How to installing myTouch 4G with ICS Custom ROM
This guide is recommended only for advanced users, since we have to play with ADB, root, S-OFF, custom recovery, etc. We also notice that flashing your android phone will void the warranty, we are not responsible if your smartphone gets damaged during the process. To avoid bad things happen, ensure you have sync phone contact, Gmail, calendar with google account. In addition, if you want to backup sms, call, logs, email, or even installed apps, you can download mybackup, and prevent you to manually install all your favs apps after updating.
First step is checking HTC Glacier/myTouch 4G firmware version, go to Settings >> About phone and find the version number of the device, if your phone has 1.17.531.2 firmware version or lower, you’re ready to obtain root privileges. But if you running 2.xx.xxx.x (Gingerbread) firmware, you need to downgrade your HTC android phone, just follow this guide to downgrade to older version.
After satisfying the required firmware version, now we can go to root process, for those who not familiar with root you can learn more at this post and also read FAQ for S-OFF and custom recovery. Getting root access is quite difficult since we work with ADB, please follow step by step explained here to make it done. If everything works fine T-Mobile myTouch 4G now rooted with S-OFF, and has engineering HBoot and ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery.
Installing ICS Custom ROM on myTouch 4G/HTC Glacier
Before flashing, we need to find an ICS ROMs. For now you can try Creamed Glacier AOSP ROM by febycv, you can download the ROM on this thread, and then move the ROM in zip file into phone SDcard. We can installing a ROM via ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery, Disable Fastboot to enter bootloader, and turn off the phone and then turn it on again by pressing hold “volume down” key, while holding it press the “power” button and then release all after entering HBoot (white screen with three android robot on the bottom of the screen), and then choose RECOVERY options using power button, now you should boot in CWM recovery. On CWM screen follow this step :
- Perform Nandroid backup first by selecting “backup and restore” options and choose backup.
- Revert android phone setting by choosing “wipe data/factory reset”
- Now choose “install zip from sdcard” options >> “choose zip from sdcard” and then find the ROM you have download before and select “yes”, now the flashing process begin.
- Once done, back to main CWM menu by select Go Back options, and reboot myTouch 4G by choosing “reboot systems now”.
As we know that HTC has no plan to give myTouch 4G an official ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) update, for those who don’t want to be bothered with flashing custom ROM process, a phone upgrade is the choice. The HTC Amaze 4G is right choice for upgrade from myTouch 4G which also has expert camera features such as 1080p video capture, 1.5 GHz Dual-core, 4.3″ display and much more, and most important is confirmed to receive official Android 4.0.1 update from HTC.
