Motorola to this day still planning to provide Android 4.0 update only for several devices (Razr, Bionic and Xoom) and maybe now Motorola still trying to implement ICS for Photon 4G and all latest devices, however it needs time since they have to make sure that the user experience on their android phones is the very best. For those who can’t wait to experience Ice Cream Sandwich on Photon 4G, installing with custom ROM (unofficial) can be alternative. Since we have seen a Mopho 4G already running CM7 (Gingerbread), so you can expect CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) which based ICS running into Mopho 4G.

Guide Updating Motorola Photon 4G to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Custom ROM

Flashing any custom ROMs (unofficial firmware) might void your phone warranty or even brick your devices, use at your own risk and we are not responsible when you experience any damage. Since all data in internal storage will be erased, you have to backup contact, simply sync it with Google account. First requirement to install ICS in Motorola Photon 4G is root access, rooting is a method of obtaining access to the android phones root directory which locked by devices manufacturer, find out more about rooting Mopho 4G on this thread. After fulfilling above requirements you need to download a custom ROMs personalised for Mopho 4G and then copy it to SD card, for now there’s still no stable ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) custom ROMs for Motorola Photon 4G, the CyanogenMod Team still developing CM9 which plans to be released in early 2012. Now we need to boot into CWM recovery, turn off your device and then hold volume down key together with power button till boots. After entering bootloader, use volume down key until you notice android recovery and then press volume up keys. Once successfully entering CWM recovery follow this step :

  1. Perform Nandroid backup by selecting “backup and restore” option, just in case you want to back to previous instalation.
  2. Revert your android phone into factory setting by selecting “wipe data/factory reset” option.
  3. Find the ROM you want to instal by selecting “install .zip from sd card” and then “choose zip from sd card”. And flashing process will begin.
  4. Once finished Go Back and reboot system now, let your android phone boots for the first time, and might take longer than usual.

We know that rooting, unlocking bootloader, installing CWM recovery and flashing ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) ROMs require more skill on Photon 4G, so it recommended only for advanced users. For novice users you need to wait till Motorola officially announces Android 4.0 update for Mopho 4G, or you can buy more phone such as Droid Razr 4G or maybe Galaxy Nexus 4G both from Verizon Wireless.
